Synopsis - With energy resources nearing depletion on Cybertron, the peace-loving Autobots decide to head out into the galaxy to find new energy sources. However the evil Decepticons give chase and during a battle on board the Autobot ship, both ships are caught in Earth's gravity and forced to crash-land. Four million years later, the energy of a volcanic eruption revives Teletran 1, the Autobot computer, who in turns begins to revive the nearest Transformer with in range of his scanners--a Decepticon. Once revived the Decepticons immediately begin to plunder the Earth for its energy resources, so they can power their ship back to Cybertron.

Editorial: More Than Meets The Eye, Part 1 offers a fair beginning to the Transformers series, starting off with a brief history of their struggle. The explanation of how they arrived at Earth is quite good and plausible. The only thing I'm not sure on though is whether the volcano they crashed into would actually go undiscovered through the 1980s; I suppose it's possible though. The area did seem pretty remote as the Decepticons made it quite a ways away with only encountering two humans coming to investigate an unmanned power station.

The introduction of Spike and Sparkplug was also good, with Optimus saving them. Although there does seem to be a small discrepancy in how we got to the oil rig in the first place. It's true Soundwave informed Megatron that Laserbeak had discovered it, but we never heard Megatron order Soundwave to send Laserbeak out to search for new energy sources. The only mission we heard Megatron send Laserbeak on was to go after Hound and Cliffjumper. But I suppose we can extrapolate looking for energy sources would have just been a logical thing for Megatron to send Laserbeak out for, and hence it was not entirely essential to have that bit in.

One changed premise that we see here, is the Autobots ability to fly in robot mode. In future episodes it is mentioned that they are unable to do this.

Nitpics: When Bumblebee and Wheeljack are headed back to Iocon and they come upon the Decepticons we see Starscream point at them and speak, but we hear Thundercracker's voice.

When the Decepticons are boarding the Autobot ship, The show a pan from the boarding point to Optimus, with Optimus then shouting something twice, only the second time, it's Megatron shouting something else to Optimus's mouth movements. Also in the original broadcast the second pass had the animator's arm show up in the corner. I think they'd meant to show Megatron coming aboard at that moment, but those cells obviously never saw the light of day.

Any other nitpicks for this episode, please forward to, or list them in your own review of this episode.
